【Lecture】

"Minha Casa, Minha Vida” (My home, my life) is a federal government's social program created in Brazil, in 2009, with the purpose to promote development and eradicate multi-dimensional poverty, by assisting low-income households to access subsidized funds for buying their own house, and financing the construction of millions of homes across the country. Despite the mixed success of the program, one important aspect in the evaluation of its effectiveness has been the dynamics that criminal organizations have adopted in those newly-built social housing units. In this lecture, Prof. Daniel Rio Tinto adopts the concept of criminal governance to discuss the effects and interactions between beneficiaries of the program and local gangs, and offers comparisons with other cases in Latin America. This lecture presents students with a chance to better understand the challenges and opportunities for societies and governments in Latin America and the Global South in the quest for development, in the intersection of poverty, inequality and public safety.
